Full details and application documents here Trustees’ Week is a time for us to come together to celebrate the achievements of nearly one million trustees across the UK, and we’d like to say thank you to our Board of Trustees who help us to ensure the organisation maintains high standards of governance and leadership. This Trustee week, we asked some of our Trustees to tell us a little bit about what brought them to the Break family. Here’s what they had to say: Nicki Bramford Nicki has worked in Norfolk and Suffolk in various public sector organisations throughout her working life, and most recently within the NHS. “Caring about children and young people in the community I live and work brought me to being a Trustee with Break. I’ve worked across Norfolk and Suffolk for over 20 years, both directly and strategically with young people, and at times have worked closely with Break. I have always been struck by the breadth of Break from homes to shops, to outreach and mental health therapeutic services and wanted to be part of such an innovative and young lives led charity. The moment I became a Trustee it was evident the passion, care and values that staff and young people have to strive to improve young lives for the better. I am Trustee link to the Young People’s Advisory Group, which has been a humbling experience. At the group I get to hear directly from young people shaping the direction of their care, and the future care of those that use the services. My best hope as trustee is that I can bring my expertise of working across health and social care, corporate governance, equity and inclusion to promote a diverse young person-centred organisation. It is such a joy to be part of the Break Family and my role as Trustee is an absolute privilege.” Juliet Allan
Juliet's background is in marketing and communications, primarily in financial services and the arts. As well as being a Trustee, she is also volunteer mentor to a young person on our Staying Close, Staying Connected service. “Being a trustee of Break makes me feel I'm contributing to the most important job in the world - raising children who feel safe, happy, healthy and hopeful. I am regularly floored by the love and commitment of the staff team, and I love feeling the energy, challenge and inspiration that young people give us. Each of the trustees brings unique skills and experience, but I believe co-production of our services is the 'secret sauce', a real opportunity to create ideas together that change the world. I'm hugely excited about what young people can bring to the table working with the trustee team to shape the future of the Break family.” Tom Krykant Tom is a communications, engagement and marketing specialist with 28 year’s experience in strategic, creative and commercial roles. He cut his teeth in a BBC newsroom before moving through the ranks of commercial radio from broadcaster to executive. He’s also worked in the television, publishing and digital industries. “Break fills me with oxygen every time I work with the brilliant, passionate teams! As a trustee, I meet a whole bunch of diverse people, all striving to change young lives for the better. Trustees take more of a helicopter view of what’s happening in the charity, providing counsel and helping keep things on track. We also lend our specialist expertise, mine being marketing, communications and engagement. Having long been an operational director in various businesses, putting my skills to good use in a different way with Break, is highly rewarding.” Find out more about our Board of Trustees here. Source: https://break-charity.org/break-charity.org/charity/news/trustees-week-6-10-november/ For many of us Christmas is a time for love, giving and the magic of dreams coming true, but for some young people who’ve grown up in care, they can miss out on this extra magic and their dreams can often be of things we would usually take for granted. That’s why our Christmas Dream Appeal will be aiming to raise over £15,000 so that we can make their dreams a reality, with all donations going towards our Make a Dream fund. And this year, for the first time ever, we’ve launched our very own range of charity Christmas jumpers! Designed straight from the heart by Break's young people, who understand more than anyone the wide spectrum of emotions over the festive period, the jumpers reflect every sentiment, from the "Bah Humbug" spirit to the “tinsel everywhere” vibes – encouraging you to ‘Do Christmas your way!’
"Christmas can be a magical time, but for those growing up in care, it can be a particularly challenging time,” explains Break CEO Rachel Cowdry. “We pride ourselves on all our work being co-produced with the young people we support and our Christmas jumpers show just how conflicting the festive season can be for those growing up in care. That's why our Christmas Appeal is so vital. Just as we would our own children, we want them to have the same opportunities and experiences and our Make a Dream fund helps us to do this. It’s not just about getting a gift at Christmas, these dreams will have a real lasting impact.” 30% from the sale of each jumper helps to go towards our appeal target of £15,000 and straight into our Make a Dream fund, ensuring every young person can experience a dream coming true throughout the year. Dreams range from a day out at a theme park, to going to the theatre or seeing their favourite band for the first time; to getting a new bike or taking driving lessons. And although these may seem like small asks, for those asking for them these opportunities can be life changing and empowering, helping them to realise that nothing is out of their reach. Like Richie, 21, a young care leaver who asked for new clothes as his budget as a care leaver just couldn’t stretch to getting him the essentials like new shoes or even a coat. “My money has to go on things like food and bills and there’s not much left over at the end of the month. Thanks to Break’s Make a Dream fund, I felt so lucky that I could get the things I needed. It was the first time I’ve ever been able to get a proper winter coat. Having nice clothes really helps you to feel better in yourself.” Other dream requests include from Amber, 14 who loves vintage clothes and wants to go to London and explore the markets, to Luke, 18 who has a learning disability which means it’s difficult to spend safe, quality time with his family and all he wants is to go the circus with his mum and carer; and Tomasz, 21 who entered care as a child and has always dreamt of going back to Germany: “I lived there for nearly four years but my circumstances meant I had to come back home. I would like to visit it again now I’m in a better place in my life,” View our Jumpers Make a Donation Source: https://break-charity.org To mark National Care Leavers week, our young care leavers wanted to step forward with their message “I’m a Care Leaver And…” campaign which aims to challenge perceptions as they call on people to see them beyond the ‘care leaver’ label. With around 10,000 young people leaving care each year in England, often with limited support, this year our young care leavers want to shatter stereotypes and highlight the incredible achievements that are possible. Throughout the week, our young care leavers will share what their most proud of across Break’s social media, whilst also highlighting the challenges that many care leavers can face. Tomasz 21, a young care leaver who was part of the campaign said: "Being a care leaver does not mean we lack potential or ambition. We are capable of achieving great things if given the right opportunities. National Care Leavers Week is not just about raising awareness; it's about empowering us and giving us the opportunity to tell our stories.” Wanting to help make a difference to young people who are leaving care, Tomasz will be sharing his daily tips on topics such as ‘You’re a care leaver AND you still have mountains of potential’ and “You’re a care leaver AND you can get an education.” Jack and Richie also took to the streets of the city, and asked the public what they thought when they they hear the term "care leaver." Their goal was not only to educate people about the realities of being a care leaver but also t Break CEO Rachel Cowdry said: “I’m really proud of all our care leavers and the incredible work they’ve done for this campaign. By challenging stereotypes and showcasing their achievements, they are proving that, with the right support, care leavers can overcome obstacles and achieve extraordinary things. Our young people are at the heart of what we do and we know that adult life is not always easy for care leavers. That’s why we have our lifelong offer. It means that we will always be there for them, ready to give them a helping hand towards a brighter future whenever they need it.”
Anyone can get involved with supporting our young care leavers. We’re always looking for dedicated people to become a volunteer mentor for a young person in or leaving care. Or you can support our work by making a regular donation which means we can continue to be there for them for as long as they need us. Full details and application documents here New charity initiative donates £2000 and gives young care leavers a memorable supercar experience! Two of our young care leavers were delighted to be given the opportunity to spend the day having a go in some super speedy supercars thanks to a new charity initiative, Giving Days, who also donated an incredible £2000 towards our CoffeeBreak van – enabling us to buy a new battery for the van! Launched by 7days Performance, a supercar raffle company based in Norfolk, Giving Days provides an opportunity for the business to contribute to the local community, and we’re delighted that they chose Break to be the first recipient of their new Giving Days Grant. The grant means that our innovative project CoffeeBreak, a mobile coffee van that serves fresh locally sourced coffee and enables our care leavers to gain valuable paid work experience, now has its own power source giving less restrictions on where it can operate.
Commenting on how much this will help Break and the CoffeeBreak project, Joe Walden, Break Opportunities Lead, and who manages CoffeeBreak, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Giving Days for their generous donation which will mean we can use our CoffeeBreak van in more places, giving our young people more opportunities for work experience, whilst also helping us raise more funds for the charity. The supercar experience was absolutely amazing and I know that both our young care leavers loved every minute and it will definitely be a day that they’ll never forget.” As well as the grant, 7days Performance also invited some of our care leavers to their headquarters to take a ride in some of their many supercars including a McLaren, a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. Liam and TJ, who are supported by our Staying Close, Staying Connected service for young care leavers, jumped at the chance and were taken out for a memorable supercar drive, while also learning more about the cars. “This was like a dream come a true!” said Liam. “I had no idea what kind of cars we were going to get to have a go in, but I loved the Lamborghini. I’d never been in any car like that, and it was such a smooth drive! We don’t usually get opportunities like this, and everyone has been so nice and easy to talk to. To be given this kind of experience was just amazing!” “To be in the position we are, as a business, would not have been possible without the community around us, therefore we started Giving Days so we could give back to that community,” explains Ross Youngman, Director at 7days Performance and a trustee at Giving Days. “Supporting those more vulnerable than us is a great feeling and seeing the smiles on the young people’s faces throughout the supercar experience was brilliant. Break does incredible work across the region, and we look forward to working with other amazing charities in the future.” Thinking of how your business can work with Break?
