We are delighted to announce that Roger Phillips will be joining us as Chair of our Isle of Man Trustees. He will be taking over from Caroline Johnson this autumn, who has successfully led the Isle of Man Council since January 2022. As a resident he has first-hand experience of island life and governance having been the Former Clerk of Tynwald [Isle of Man Parliament], Secretary of the House of Keys and Counsel to Mr Speaker (2008 to 2021). Before that, Roger was a House of Commons Clerk from 1981 to 2008 (Assistant Clerk 1981; Senior Clerk 1984, then moving to Deputy Principal Clerk in 1991) – having previously been called to the bar in 1978.
Roger commented that: “I am very pleased to be able to serve as a trustee of St Christopher’s. As a result of my experience in my professional life, both at the bar and as a public servant working for Parliaments, I have gained an awareness of the need to improve the start in life of some children and young people who require support and encouragement from those outside their immediate families. Although I have retired from paid public service, this role will allow me to continue to contribute to the wellbeing of society. I would like St Christopher’s work on the Isle of Man to be an example to similar organisations across the UK.” St Christopher’s Isle of Man is a subsidiary of St Christopher’s Fellowship and has been working on the island since 2004 – to support children and young people in care, on the edge of care or leaving care.
